Notes on this view:

This is an early English chalk-manner lithograph made by S. M. Smith, after a self-portrait by Gerald Dow (the names of the lithographer and artist are inscribed below the image). A few inscriptions on the surrounding mount detail the edition number, dedication, and the date of the print. The print has been inlaid into a larger sheet of paper and is positioned off-center. Notice that the print appears darker than the surrounding paper mount. When viewed from the back, however, the print and surrounding paper mount are similar in color. This indicates that the front of the paper was treated to better receive ink.
