Notes on this view:

This print was a book illustration taken from The Autobiography of Joseph Jefferson published in 1890 by the Century Company. Jefferson was an American actor most commonly associated with his portrayal of Rip Van Winkle. He was born in Philadelphia in 1829 and first achieved acclaim as a stage actor in Tom Taylor’s Our American Cousin in 1858. He adapted Rip Van Winkle for stage a year later with limited success. In 1865 the play was rewritten and, with Joseph cast in the lead role, became popular in London and the United States.

Jefferson often spent his winters on a small island in Bayou Teche in Louisiana, which served as inspiration for this image. In his autobiography he describes the region as having “romantic beauty” and fondly recounts his time there.
