Notes on this view:

This print depicts the painting Bombed Yokohama (1945) by American painter Bernard Perlin. Between 1943 and 1945, Perlin was employed by LIFE and Fortune magazines (respectively) as an artist-correspondent covering World War II on the European, Asian and Middle Eastern fronts. This image was featured in the September 2, 1945 issue of Fortune magazine for the article, “The Air War in Japan.”

The bombing of Yokohama, an industrial seaport city, took place on May 29, 1945 by the Allied forces. The air raid lasted for over an hour and destroyed roughly 44% of the city. It was one of a series of bombings to take place during the air campaign against Japan toward the end of the war.
