Notice the warm, olive-brown image color of this photograph. This was achieved by toning the print in both gold and platinum. Double toning with these noble metals was common practice for matte collodion prints and could produce a wide variety of tones, ranging from neutral purples to warm olive-blacks or browns. In this case, the warm, olive-brown hue was likely attained by using more platinum than gold during the toning process. The final print color of a matte collodion print is dependent on toner formula and length of time in the toning bath. The process ultimately tried to mimic the qualities of the more expensive platinum print process.
