Notes on this view:

This late nineteenth century Danish studio portrait is mounted to a carte de visite card measuring 4 ¼ x 2 ½ inches. Cartes de visite –French for “visiting card”— were introduced in the 1850s and quickly became a very popular photographic format. Their popularity declined beginning in the 1870s with the introduction of the larger cabinet card format. While late nineteenth century cartes de visite are relatively rare, a wide variety of photographic processes available at the time can be found mounted to these cards, such as this matte collodion print.
