Notes on this view:

This large tintype is a studio portrait depicting a Union Civil War soldier (possibly cavalry) and likely his wife; based on the dress of the sitters' the plate can be dated to ca. 1865.

This object is particularly interesting for several reasons. It is a large "whole plate" tintype (8 ½ x 6 ½ inches), which are relatively rare. The entire studio backdrop is visible in the image, however, it had been over matted to crop out the backdrop as evidenced by the oval shaped discoloration on the plate. The now missing mat was probably of poor quality paper and discolored the object. Finally, this plate bears many "artifacts" of the wet collodion process, which will be described in the following Guided Tour tabs.
