Notes on this view:

The El Grotto Supper Club in the Pershing Hotel was a jazz club in the south side of Chicago operating from 1944 to 1947. The club hosted popular musicians, most notably "Tiny" Bradshaw. The photograph was taken by a professional photographer likely employed by the club. The photographer would photograph customers, print the picture, place it in this paper mat and sell it to the customer. It was likely printed very soon after having been taken and sold to the customer the same night or the next day.

Notice the mat is made of poor quality paper. There are severe discolorations, particularly near the edges. The acidity in the paper mat may contribute to the degradation of the photograph. It also appears as if something has spilled on the object (perhaps at the club) causing stains. However, the mat is part of the object and provides good contextual information, such as the name and location of the club. Notice the inscription, "Much fun Feb 16, 1946."
