Notes on this view:

This woodburytype is mounted on a carte-de-visite (CDV), a 4 x 2 ½ inch card, and framed by a decorative rectangular border. It is a photomechanical reproduction of a photograph of A. A. Dowty, an American writer for the London Figaro, a Victorian magazine, circa 1880. Celebrity CDVs were highly collectible during this era. The woodburytype shows no signs of image deterioration; it still has exceptional tonal transitions, robust shadow areas and acuity of detail. The image color was likely chosen to approximate that of albumen, the dominant process of the time.
